We understand the challenges faced by manufacturers
of specialist pharmaceutical products.

Your Challenges

Improving productivity and quality to meet the competitive marketplace demands whilst adhering to strict regulations.

Overcoming materials handling issues such as powder flow problems and blend segregation.

How Matcon Can Help

We size the IBCs to match throughput demands & with automation, handling of IBCs is reduced to a minimum.

We optimise your materials handling system to meet the needs of the process and facility throughput objectives.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing:

Frequently Asked Questions

Powder handling systems in pharmaceutical manufacturing directly influence blend homogeneity and content uniformity. Matcon IBC Blending is at the heart of creating blend homogeneity as the tumble mixing, diffusion mixing creates content uniformity equivalent to other mixers such as conta blenders.

With Cone Valve technology inside each IBC, powders are transferred without risk of segregation, particle stratification, or uncontrolled flow, leading to assured quality in the final dosage. When feeding to Tablet Presses, the blend that was created during blending is carefully discharged without separation of actives and excipients.

Well‑designed systems support GMP compliance by offering predictable, repeatable handling with full containment and reduced operator intervention. Resulting in improved dose accuracy, high product quality, and confidence in meeting regulatory expectations for content uniformity.

Key powder properties in pharmaceutical manufacturing determine the selection and design of powder handling and blending equipment.

Powder properties such as flowability, particle size, bulk density and moisture content determine how powders will behave in the handling and processing equipment.

Flowability influences whether powders discharge consistently or are prone to issues such as bridging, ratholing or uncontrolled flow. Moisture content and hygroscopic behaviour will influence this cohesion and flow stability.

Particle size and size distribution, along with bulk density affect blend uniformity and the risk of segregation during transfer and discharge. If there are large particles they can rise up in the mix through percolation effects, whilst fines will move downwards under the sifting effect.

Understanding these characteristics allows equipment to be specified with the correct discharge geometry, mass‑flow transfer, containment and blending method. A system designed around the powder helps maintain blend integrity, supports GMP compliance and delivers consistent, repeatable pharmaceutical production.

API Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Solutions

Matcon Cone Valve IBCs have the unique ability to handle the solvent-rich ‘wet cake’ solids between the centrifuge and drying processes, as well as the powders before reaction and after drying. This enables the contents of any reactor to be transferred to any dryer using our IBCs.

It is this flexibility of production, combined with the ability to discharge a wide range of API bulk solids that has made Matcon the choice for many major pharmaceutical API companies.

We acknowledge that the structure of API systems can vary and tends to be quite bespoke. If you’re interested in finding out what we have to offer please do get in touch.
